This is a fantastic recipe, and even though the dough breaks easily, the finished product looks lovely and appetising. You can use all sorts of different fillings, by replacing the poppy seeds with chopped figs, dates or apricots. (Some cinnamon goes nicely apricot filling.) This makes about 20 half-moon cookies.

This is a great and unusual alternative to chocolate chip cookies – chocolate cookies with beetroot. Believe it or not the beetroot goes beautifully with dark chocolate and is a healthy substitute for butter or margarine.
