Diabetes
Nov 16th, 2009 | By Hulababy | Category: HealthDiabetes is on the rise, especially type-2 diabetes, where the body can not produce enough insulin. This affects mainly adult and overweight people, although there is a genetic risk as well. Many factors such as an unhealthy lifestyle, no exercise, too much processed food and sugar in our diets can contribute to developing the disease. The good news is that making some lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of developing this disease.
Dr. Sarah Brewer suggests the following changes in her book “Natural Approaches To Diabetes”.
- Make sure you do not eat too much salt, sugar and fat.
- Include plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet.
- Choose wholegrain flour, pasta, rice and porridge instead of white flour.
- Increase your exercise – 30 minutes of a day is ideal.
- Green tea is a healthy alternative to tea or coffee.
All my recipes include wholemeal flour instead of white flour, soya margarine or healthy oils instead of butter and agave or date nectar instead of sugar. They are healthy alternatives to your favourite treats that are normally full of bad fats, sugar and white flour. Wholemeal flour, porridge oats and agave syrup are all low GI food, which means they keep your blood sugar levels steady instead of giving you a sugar high that is followed immediately by a slump and a craving for more sugar.
